Purple Hair, Don't Care

The goal: For quite a while, I had been wanting to get dark purple highlights in my naturally black hair. I wanted more of a “peekaboo” look, rather than big, chunky streaks.

The plan: I went with Carole Flamant Salon De Beaute in Miami based on a recommendation from a friend. I went to Amelia for the color and Kristina for the cut. I loved that they worked together to make sure that the result would work well together.

The color: I basically spent the entire day with Amelia since the majority of my appointment was the color. She was very kind and knowledgable, and I felt comfortable with my hair in her hands. I would definitely go back to her and I would definitely recommend her. She actually grew up near Atlanta, and since that’s where I was living for the past few years, we had a lot to talk about. She was super sweet and kept offering me water, coffee, and magazines. She was also clearly really good at what she does. Not only did she do a wonderful job, she listened to what I wanted, and she was able to answer any questions I had throughout the process. This was my first time having color put in my hair, so I especially appreciated how well she took care of me. It was a long process since she first had to bleach the sections of my hair that I wanted to color, and then go back and color those sections using Paul Mitchell Ink (I believe she used blue ink with a bit of pink ink mixed in to get the purple color).

The cut: I wasn’t planning on cutting much off the length of my hair, but it turned out if I cut it all off, I could donate it, so I went for it. As a result, it’s way shorter than I would have liked, but I keep telling myself that it’s just hair and it will grow back. It’s a cute angled bob where it’s longer in the front than the back. It’s a chic haircut, but my favorite look is a high bun and I can’t do that with my three inch long hairs. I also can’t put all of it in a ponytail for the gym without at least 100 bobby pins because the bottom pieces are too short.

Kristina did a bit of "undercutting" which basically is a few shorter layers "underneath" the hair. I LOVED this technique for thickness, but it does mean that the pieces at the nape of my neck are shorter than the hair you see in the upcoming photo.

The result: Six hours and several hundred dollars later, I came out looking fabulous! The color placement was natural and the purple color shined brightest in sunlight and in direct light.

The first wash: The first time I washed my hair after the salon, there was a purple waterfall. I was very concerned, but I figured it was just some residual dye.

Subsequent washes: Since then, every time I shampoo my hair, there is a purple waterfall. The areas where the purple has washed out are orangey-blonde. The color seems to be holding a lot better near the ends of my hair compared to near the roots.

Final thoughts: Overall, I am happy with the result! I love the color (I’m keeping an eye on it to see how long it lasts) and I’m still learning to make the cut work for me by experimenting with new ways to style it :)

Two month color update: The color washes out SO quickly! I picked up Manic Panic semi-permanent dye in the color ultra violet and I use a highlighting brush to touch up every few washes. Fortunately, I don’t have to be too precise because the color only picks up on the bleached parts of my hair, but “every few washes” is VERY often. I leave it in for at least 30 minutes (because that’s what Manic Panic recommends), but I leave it longer (a few hours or so) if I don’t have anywhere to be. It’s a vegan, vegetable based dye and I have to say, it is VERY conditioning. My hair feels so soft after using this!

Two month cut update: My hair has grown juuuust a bit which makes it a lot better! I think it’s the angle cut that doesn’t work that well for me. In this Miami humidity, the longer bits in the front curl up a bit which is hard to deal with.

This isn’t my first time with hair this length, but it is the first time I’ve had so much trouble enjoying it. Thus, I took it as a personal mission to figure out what was different than before. I can think of two previous times (where I was at least a teenager-- childhood mushroom cuts don’t count for this analysis) when I had hair about this length. The first time was freshman year of college. I really liked this one! I had the same angled cut where the front was longer than the back, but at that time, the “short” back was even shorter than it is now and it was layered in the back so it didn’t “poof” out. I grew that out, and then a few years later, I cut it all off again. This time, I had a more even cut, but no layers, so it appeared thicker and fuller. I liked this one too. It was a pretty basic look, but my hair looked shiny and healthy. Currently, I have a combination of the angle with the no layers, which I don’t think I like as much. I don’t want to add in any dramatic layers because they tend to make my hair look a little thin at the ends, but next time I go in for a haircut, I think I’ll get it evened out a bit and then go from there.

Two month style update: As far as current styles, as an alternative to my usual high bun, I have opted for a lower bun! I think it’s cute, and I like that it doesn’t have a chance to frizz as much because the hairs are so short. I can still do both curly and straight styles, but I think I have been preferring the straight look with the shorter hair. Curls on my hair at this length are making my face look a bit wide. Either way, I have been needing a bit more texture with my hair at this length, so I experimented with Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray (I can review it if you like) which I would say made a big difference!

Overall, I do like this haircut a lot more than I first did! It has really “grown” on me ;)

2013 Favorites

These are a few of my favorite things... :)

Macadamia Natural Oil Deep Repair Masque: I probably should have included this in my 2012 favorites, but here it is now! This stuff is awesome. Makes my hair shiny and manegable. Plus, it smells good :) It “nourishes” my hair and keeps it smooth and cooperative until the next use! It helps with tangles during sticky summer humidity and dryness during cold winter months. The price is kind of a turnoff, but it lasts a looooong time AND they sell a trial size of this (that’s what I started with). Just try it! Treat yo’self! [shout out to any Parks and Recreation fans!]

Nars Larger Than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner in Via Veneto and in Campo De'Fiori (ie: black and gold): I do love me some eyeliner. I like black on top and colors on the bottom. Usually gold, because it’s the perfect color and whatnot. I swatched the liner at Sephora and really loved the formula. I purchased the black one, but I also had my eye on the gold one. A few days later, I purchased that one too! I do have to mention, that these eyeliners run out a lot faster than other pencil liners I have used (ex. Urban Decay 24/7).

I might still repurchase at least the gold one again, because it really was a good shade for my skin tone. Plus, I’m kind of an eyeliner junkie and I will totally manage to convince myself that it’s worth it. Heck, maybe I’ll even convince YOU that it’s worth it! It is...

Bumble and Bumble Color Minded UV Protective Styling Balm: I don’t actually have color treated hair, but I love the extra oomph of protection that this styling cream offers. It gives a little shine and a little control, which is all I need to birdnest my hair into a bun (my go to “style”). I also feel comfortable using heat tools after using this product (along with biosilk, of course. If you haven’t read my 2012 favorites, you really need to catch up), even though it doesn’t specifically claim to be a heat protectant.

Chambray: Don’t know what to wear? WEAR ANYTHING. And then pop a chambray top over it and unbuttoned. It will make it perfect. I don’t love to have bare skin all over the place, even during the summer, since I still get cold indoors. I like to have a little extra cover up just in case. I love that chambray tops are basically the summer version of a cardigan. They are so easy to throw over tank tops or dresses, and the neutral denim looks adorable with everything! You can even wear it buttoned up! Some of my favorite ways to style it as a solo shirt were with mint green pants and a long necklace, or with brightly colored shorts.

MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural: This powder is fabulous. I have been using it for a lot longer than just this year. I’ve probably been using this for 3-4 years. It’s just an easy, non-cakey, non-break-outy powder for your face. I would say it has no coverage, but it has a nice finish. Very “natural.” I don’t usually wear foundation, just a little concealer under my eyes if I have the time for it (MAC Studio Finish), and I just dust this all over my face (with the MAC 182 brush). I also must confess, I haven’t tried many face powders. Before this, I used to use one by Clinique. Then I tried this and I never let go. I use the color medium dark, if you are curious!

Benefit Cosmetics They’re Real! Mascara: I don’t generally gravitate toward high end mascaras, since I’ve always had such good luck with drugstore options. This fairly new Benefit product, however, has really gotten people buzzing! A lot of beauty bloggers, etc. really started raving about it and I caved. I had to see what the hype was about! Sephora sells a mini size of this, so I decided to give it a go. WHOA! I will have to say, I certainly noticed a dramatic (in a good way) result! The Sephora 2013 birthday gift also included the same size mascara, which I haven’t opened yet, so I have yet to actually purchase a full size tube of this. It is quite pricey and I don’t know if I’ll be able to bring myself to repurchase it over the Maybelline ones (see next favorite) which are so good to me and my wallet! AND the Maybelline ones have waterproof formulas which I always prefer. Ignoring the value for money situation (which I have yet to evaluate), this is an excellent mascara and it deserved a mention.

Maybelline Colossal Mascara – I ended up buying this during a sudden inspiration to branch out mascara-wise. It’s just a great mascara. It makes my lashes look really thick and fabulous (not clumpy), and I think you should give it a chance! I have gotten compliments on my lashes with this mascara on :) I also want to mention that I really love the Maybelline Mega Plush mascara (it looks SUPER natural—not to be confused with supernatural), but it’s hard to call this a “favorites” list if I just choose everything.

Cranberry Woods Candle: I’ve always loved the idea of candles, but I never really actually ended up buying any (until recently, obviously). They’re kind of expensive, and I wasn’t really sure if I would get any use out of them. I was visiting a friend in Philly back in October, and we ended up going to the gigantic King of Prussia mall. They have a Yankee candle store, and I bought a very small candle called “Autumn Wreath.” Long story short, I loved it! Not too long after, Bath and Body Works had a sale where I ended up getting candles for about 60% off. I bought a few candles and ended up really liking some of the scents (shout out to “Sweater Weather.”) The one I really loved was “Cranberry Woods.” I’m going to go ahead and give you the description from the bottom of the candle since I don’t see how I would do a better job, so here’s what they have to say: "Fresh, tart cranberries, blackcurrant and warm cinnamon bark combine in a delightful fragrance inspired by the magic of the woods during harvest time." It’s kind of woodsy, but not so much that you forget you’re indoors. I loved it so much that later, when they had another sale, I ended up purchasing another!

Cuisinart Smart Stick Hand Blender: Well as you may have noticed from some of my previous posts, I got really into smoothie making this year. My go-to-smoothie in the mornings has been bananas, spinach, and blueberries. I would prefer mixed berries, but Publix only sells jumbo bags of either blueberries or strawberries (first world problem of the day). I honestly never would have thought to choose a hand blender over a stand up blender, but this one is so convenient! Side note: I would also love a juicer.

Sage advice from Dad

I turn to my dad in the middle of a rough few weeks of school:

Behind the Scenes: Pumpkin Fails and Prevails

Well it’s that time again! My department is having the annual holiday party. Everyone makes something and brings it for everyone to enjoy. Last year I showed up with break-and-bake cookies only to be ridiculed by my peers with their overzealous homemade cheesecakes and nanaimo bars. This year, I decided to step up my game. PUMPKIN BREAD. Who doesn’t love a good pumpkin loaf this time of year? I KNOW I DO.

I got the idea from my roommate, who suddenly had a craving for it back in October and after looking up a recipe online, started working magic in the kitchen. It was a success! She ended up making it a few more times, and I figured the recipe looked easy enough for me to have a go at.

I decided to make the bread whilst I was on a four-way phone call with my college roommates. My already limited attention span was thinly divided between my friends and my culinary adventure. Somewhere between the salt and the vanilla extract, I became so engrossed in the conversation that I managed to put ONE TABLESPOON of baking powder instead of ONE FOURTH TEASPOON. OOPS!  I frantically interrupted the roommate conversation for advice, but if anyone did offer any suggestions, it was completely drowned out by the roaring laughter. Thanks, guys.

Thus, I turned to my trusted mentor: Google. Apparently, the extra baking powder might result in a slightly off tasting loaf. Ok, no problem! I’ll add more cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice! Nailed it! OH JUST KIDDING-- upon second consideration, it seems that I originally added only a TEASPOON of baking powder, not a TABLESPOON as I had originally thought. It was still four times the amount I was supposed to, but now a much smaller scale issue. The issue? I have already doused my batter in spice thinking I was compensating for way more than I actually was. Well, I’m sure it will be fine. Who doesn’t love a little extra kick of flavor? I KNOW I DO.

Alright, let’s get over that already. I was eager to put the pumpkin in. The recipe called for three cups of fresh, shredded pumpkin. As a busy grad student, I chose canned. My roommate only used one 15 oz. can of pureed pumpkin. I SHOULD HAVE LISTENED TO HER. One of the commenters on the recipe website said they used 2 cups of pureed pumpkin (a little over a can) and I had bought two cans anyway, so I thought the tad extra pumpkin would make the bread moist and delicious.

I add. I stir. I pour into the pan. Screw this bread, let’s put it in the oven. Yes, I preheated the oven, and yes, I set the timer. Fast forward an hour and fifteen minutes. I go get the pumpkin bread from the oven. It was HUGE and man was it HEAVY. I put it on the stove to let it cool, and IT TIPS OVER ONTO THE STOVE AND OVERFLOWS ITS LIQUIDY DISASTROUSNESS EVERYWHERE. WHAT?!

Mess

The outside was DELICIOUS, but the inside was like lava! FINE. I let the top part that fell off ooze on the stovetop and put the pan back in the oven. At least now that the top is off, it might cook through.

Pumpkin lava

I checked on it every 10 minutes after that. It seemed to be cooking ok! The problem? IT LOOKS TERRIBLE. The beauty of a loaf is the smooth rounded top, and my loaf? MESS. The kicker? It tasted pretty good!

Delicious Imperfection
Not too bad from this angle, ay?

So what did I do? I cut it into slices. THEY WERE GOING TO DO THAT ANYWAY. I brought it. IT WAS DELICIOUS. Granted, I did some pretty heavy advertising, and I may or may not have guilted half of the faculty and all of my friends into eating it, but it was all gone by the end!

Success-ish!

All gone!

To anyone in my department who has come across this: if you didn’t taste it, you missed out.

Regarding the original recipe, I think everything might have been ok if I had just let it cook for way longer than the recipe called for. Or at least added less pumpkin puree since that was probably adding some serious liquid to the situation. I have an old oven, so maybe things we a little off. Either way, it's too bad I pulled it out in the middle and spilled half of it.

Moral of the story: Where there’s a will, there’s a way Save yourself the drama and just get the ready-to-bake cookies.

Smoothie of the day

Well as of late, I am obsessed with making smoothies. My generous roommate has basically let me take over her blender and I have really just been going overboard. I started out with a few basic, delicious ones (bananas and berries, and sometimes a little spinach that you can’t taste over the berries), but in the last few days, I’ve been branching out a little...

Today’s special blend had carrots, bananas, and blueberries. The verdict? Totally drinkable, but nothing to be enthusiastic about. It basically didn’t have any exciting flavor. Everything sort of neutralized, but if I had to pick one thing I tasted the most, it would have to be the banana. To be fair, I put two bananas in and then scrimped on everything else. I actually wanted to make a carrot/ginger smoothie, but I didn’t have any ginger, so I figured blueberries would do the trick. Note to self: buy ginger
